Project Scope

In September 2024, Gulf Civil was awarded the works contract for DRFA Restoration for the repair of unsealed roads within Douglas Shire Council Region, Far North Queensland. The project covers the area from Daintree to Cape Tribulation.

The works focus on restoring unsealed roads affected by Tropical Cyclone Jasper, reconnecting communities and improving access. With a focus on road rehabilitation, erosion management, and drainage improvements, the project enhances long-term durability while meeting client and community expectations.

THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT, GULF CIVIL HAS IMPLEMENTED STRATEGIES TO OVERCOME KEY CHALLENGES, INCLUDING:

  • Remote Location & Limited Accessibility – The project is located in a remote area with minimal access to essential engineering and construction support services, requiring careful logistical planning.
  • Weather Conditions & Site Conditions – Unpredictable weather, including residual impacts from Cyclone Jasper, poses challenges in scheduling and material placement.
  • Material Supply & Haulage – Transporting materials across rugged terrain and ensuring a consistent supply of gravel and construction materials from quarries presents logistical difficulties.
  • Environmental & Biosecurity Compliance – Working in a sensitive ecological area requires adherence to strict environmental regulations, including Electric Ant Management and controlled water sourcing.

PROJECT SCOPE

The project involves the restoration of 50 km of unsealed roads across 44 different roads in Douglas Shire, ensuring they are safe and operational. The works include:

  • Heavy formation grading.
  • Heavy shoulder grading.
  • Gravel resheeting.
  • Transportation and delivery of all construction materials, gravel from the nominated borrow pit
  • Bulk excavation.
  • Bulk filling.
  • Reshape Table Drain
  • Rock protection
  • Clearing of debris and obstructions
  • Replacement of guideposts and signage

GULF CIVIL SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THIS PROJECT, ENSURING HIGH STANDARDS OF QUALITY, SAFETY, AND EFFICIENCY:

  • Successful restoration of essential roads – Ensuring all 50 km of unsealed roads are restored to a safe and operational condition.
  • On-time and within budget – Project execution aligned with the planned schedule and financial expectations.

  • Environmental compliance – Adherence to biosecurity measures and environmental management best practices.
  • Local workforce participation – Providing employment opportunities and skill development for the community.
  • Enhanced resilience – Implementation of rock protection and improved drainage solutions to minimize future weather-related damages.
