Project Scope
In August 2024, Gulf Civil was awarded the works contract for pavement rehabilitation on the Kennedy Highway (Mareeba – Ravenshoe) 32B.
Funded by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), the project aims to enhance road safety, extend pavement lifespan, and improve driving conditions along this key regional route.
These upgrades will create a more resilient and low-maintenance highway, benefiting local communities, freight transport, and regional connectivity.
Throughout the project, Gulf Civil has anticipated and developed strategies to address key challenges, including:
- Traffic Management & Safety – Ensuring minimal disruption to highway users while maintaining safe working conditions.
- Weather Conditions – Managing potential delays due to unpredictable weather in Far North Queensland.
- Material Availability & Sourcing – Managing supply chain limitations due to a restricted number of local suppliers
- Workforce Availability & Recruitment – Addressing challenges in sourcing skilled local labor.
Project Scope
The project involves the rehabilitation of pavement along the Kennedy Highway (Ch 76.215 – 77.735 km) between Mareeba and Ravenshoe, in the Tablelands Regional Council jurisdiction. The works include:
- Shoulder widening.
- Granular overlay.
- In-situ cement stabilisation.
- Bitumen surfacing.
- Road drainage improvements.
- Compaction and grading.
- Excavation and subgrade preparation.
- Installation of roadside safety elements.
- Hydromulch application.
Key Achievements
Gulf Civil successfully completed this project, ensuring high standards of quality, safety, and efficiency:
- Enhanced Road Safety – Improved highway conditions with wider shoulders and better pavement structure.
- Stronger Pavement Performance – Applied granular overlay and in-situ cement stabilisation to increase road durability.
- Optimized Drainage Efficiency – Upgraded drainage systems to reduce erosion and improve water runoff management.
- Sustainable Construction Practices – Incorporated hydromulching and erosion control measures to minimize environmental impact.
