Project Scope
Gulf Civil were invited to tender and complete the concrete floodway upgrade work in the Wellesley Islands of the Gulf of Carpentaria, in particular Mornington Island. The Mornington Shire Council engaged Gulf Civil to import plant, material, and supplies via barge from the mainland of Australia to the islands in order to complete the scope of works.
The betterment works consisted of the following:
- Site Setup and mobilization
- Excavation
- Delivery of steel and concrete
- Construction of reinforced concrete floodways of length 50m and width 7m
- Management of impassable road network prior to commencement of works
- Drainage Works
- Rock Protection
- Back Fill
- Install guidepost and depth indicators
Key challenges in the delivery of this project included:
- Practical planning of scopes of works and stages in order to minimise potential impacts of impending wet season activity
- Programming of works in order to commence the project on a limited timeframe whilst also engaging, securing and transporting imported gravel critical to critical path sections of the project
- Maintaining a strong working relationship with local community stakeholders
Highlights & Outcomes
- Completion before the scheduled date
- Working with the client to commence works under contract at a fast tracked site possession
- Mobilisation of marine resources from around Australia to the Gulf of Carpentaria to meet program needs
- Implementation of traffic staging to minimise disruption to key road network critical to ongoing activities and operations of Island stakeholders.
