Project Scope

Gulf Civil were awarded the Wallaby Point Road Upgrade project to upgrade a section of the Wallaby Point Road including a culvert upgrade following on from the successful completion of the 2018/19 DRFA project.

The project, for Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Council, was completed on time and on budget with excellent reviews from all parties involved.

The location of upgrade was at Wallaby Point Road in Palm Island which connects the residential area with the main town in Island, we were able to effectively divert the traffic through a sidetrack so as to ensure the day to day operations on the Island.

The project scope of works includes the following qra treatments:

  • Excavation for diversion channels, all materials
  • Removal or demolition of culverts and slab structures.
  • Removal or demolition of footbridge slab structures
  • Clearing and Grubbing
  • Subgrade testing CBR
  • Concrete bases in culverts
  • End structures to culverts, reinforeced concrete, Aprons, Wingwalls
  • Supply and installation of Concrete Box Culverts (1200 x 1200)
  • Rock protection
  • Backfill with select backfill material
  • Type 2.1, Unbound pavement
  • Supply and place steel bar reinforcement
  • Supply and place reinforcing mesh
  • Supply and place concrete in jointed reinforced base
  • Longitudinal joints
  • Expansion joints and isolation joints
  • Supply and Installation of Steel Bridge
  • Sprayed Bitumen Surfacing

Project Summary

  • Project completed well ahead of program and on budget.
  • Provided and delivered best value for money outcome for both the council and community.
  • Placed 301m3 of concrete in the construction of 1800m2 of Heavy Duty Grade 40/20 concrete pavement.
  • Supply and installation of concrete box culverts (4) 1200 x 1200 RCBC

Highlights & Outcomes

  • Gulf Civil mobilised on short notice to complete works to maintain road safety.
  • Gulf Civil successfully maintained a supply chain of required materials, supplies and maintenance consumables for the project within a remote region.
  • Employing and Training local workers for future community benefit.

  • Poured 301m3 of concrete in the construction of 175mm thick 40MPa Heavy Duty Concrete Pavement.
  • Effective programming and planning minimised the impact of wet weather during the culvert installation.
