Project Scope
In August of 2023, Gulf Civil was the successful tenderer works contract for Iama Coastal Defence Works for Torres Strait Island Regional Council in Far North Queensland covering part of the Torres Strait Islands.
The following project work involved the construct the Seawall and Bund Wall works on Warraber and Iama Islands. Also, this project was able to meet the Client and Community expectations.
Over the duration of the project, the project management team overcame several challenges including:
- Programming, Planning, and minimizing impacts of wet and flood weather.
- Removal of and treatment of contaminated materials (incl. PASS/ASS and PFAS)
- Supply and delivery precast components.
- Supply and delivery quarry material.
- Traffic management control.
- Employing and Training local workers for future community Benefit.
- Cultural Heritage and community engagement management.
- Ability to maintain a supply chain of required materials, supplies and maintenance consumables for the project within a remote region.
- Maintaining a strong working relationship with local community stakeholders.
The project, consisted of the following:
- Clear and Grub
- Removal of Structures as outlined within the Tender documents
- Removal of existing Armour Rock at location of new wall
- Placement of Geotextile / Geogrid / Texcel
- Placement of Initial layer of Granular Fill (Gravel)
- Placement of Bridging Rock wrapped in Geotextile
- Placement of Filter Rock
- Placement of Armour Rock
- Installation / Repair of Check Valves
- Smoothing & Geograss of existing Bundwall
- Minor Drainage works
- Significant Concrete and Drainage works
