Project Scope

Gulf Civil were successful in the tender for the Barcoo FD1 package for the Barcoo Shire Council.

Going above and beyond to meet this deadline was a great success to the Gulf team and for a new Client.

The following project scope involve significant roadworks with complex staging considerations with works including:

The project works consisted of the following:

  • 270km of Roadworks Restoration
  • Heavy Formation, Medium Formation and Gravel Re-sheet construction
  • Bulk Excavation of silted areas
  • Bulk Fill of rutted or significantly damaged sections of road
  • Win, Load and Cart over 100,000t of Gravel
  • Construction of Floodways
  • Demolition and Construction of Bridge Replacement
  • Application of 2 coat seal
  • Use of full mobile camp for entire 3 crews utilized on the project

Project Challenges

Key challenges in the delivery of this project included:

  • Very remote working conditions with several sites being up to 220km from the local township.
  • Water sources very limited due to drought conditions within the community. Innovations required at every site to produce water cost-effectively.
  • Side-track installations required at all sites to maintain access for road trains delivering gravel. Regular maintenance and grading required over project duration.
  • Programming of works to commence the project on a limited timeframe whilst also engaging, securing, and transporting imported gravel critical to critical path sections of the project.
  • Maintaining a strong working relationship with local community stakeholders.
  • Traffic Staging and Management to always maintain 2 lanes of traffic, within a minimal width road reserve
  • Management of Cultural Heritage considerations and expectations
  • Construction within a Funding timeline for the Funding body (QRA)
  • Plant maintenance in testing conditions.
  • Adequate use of variable borrow material available to the Contractor

Highlights & Outcomes

  • Delivering the project within a Funding deadline for the Client
  • Meeting the deadline after suffering 59 days of Inclement weather impact
  • The only Contractor in the region to complete the scope of works within the Funding Deadline limitations out of several packages within the region
